That’s right! No more book buying for as long as I can hold out. I hope to make this stick until May at the very least. Hopefully, the books I win, receive for review, or am gifted will scratch my ‘need new books’ itch I get practically every day. February 14 marked my final book purchase so I’ve had 12 successful days thus far. My bank account is so happy. My willpower has yet to be truly tested though since I know there are about 5 books in the mail headed towards my house as we speak. Once these beauties are received – WHAT WILL HAPPEN THEN?
This book buying ban has occurred at a rather opportune time as I’m feeling generally book slumpish. After being super excited to begin The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides, I haven’t progressed past page 36 and it has been a week. Something tells me that particular book just might not be for me right now since I flew through John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and have quickly progressed through The Expats by Chris Pavone. The Marriage Plot just feels so pretentious – exactly what I don’t need right now.
Speaking of The Expats, I’ll be finishing this one up soon and have a copy to GIVEAWAY thanks to the lovelies at Crown Publishing/Random House. My review will probably be posted later this week with the giveaway so mark your calendars and check back. I’m having a lot of fun with this one so far!
In non-bookish news, my week was pretty average. The birthday was okay, but I got to feeling pretty lousy so mainly just snuggled up on the couch watching movies as a celebration. Oh how much has changed in the past 7 or 8 years! I did get to eat some birthday ice cream. I don’t allow myself this particular treat often because I can’t control myself and go on ice cream binges. But I enjoyed my little pint of deliciousness – flavor of choice? Mayfield’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough – YUM!
Happy Sunday everyone!!
I tried a book buying ban last year, and only did marginally well with it. It can be so hard! I wish you a lot of luck with it, and hope that you do push through with The Marriage Plot. It was hard to get into int he beginning, but by the end, I was sad to have to let the characters go.
I hope I stick with this ban. I have way too many books on my shelves that haven’t been read. Also, I totally plan on finishing The Marriage Plot because I love Jeffrey Eugenides so very much and can’t imagine not loving this one. Just need to wait until I feel my reading mojo has returned!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Marriage Plot. I feared that I might find this book to be somewhat pretentious, so I am happy to hear that you have found it so. Scratching it off my library request list. Thank you.
It does feel pretentious, but other readers are cheering me on. We’ll see how I fare farther along. I just haven’t identified with or found a particular voice worthy of reading yet.
A book buying ban, huh?! Boy, that is certainly something I should put into effect, also!! How many others out there would agree?
I think anyone in the book community could use a book buying ban every once and a while!
I had hoped to love The Marriage Plot, but it felt tedious and full of unnecessary details.
Too bad, since I got it in hard cover.
I really need to stop pre-ordering books, because they all seem to hit the bank account at the same time! lol
Good luck with your ban.
Here’s MY SUNDAY SALON POST
Definitely getting a sense of the tedious and mine is hardback as well!! I will soldier on, but need a bit of a break.
Good luck with the book buying ban!
I own a copy of The Marriage Plot and am a big fan of Eugenides. I’m saving the book for when I am in the right kind of mood for it, probably when I have some time off work and can really focus on it.
I think saving the book for the right time is a fantastic idea. I’m going to wait until I’ve found my reading mojo again and can properly give my full attention before I give it another go.
Chances are you’ll have plenty of books to read without buying any!! It’s a good idea… I am a happy sucker for stockpiling my TBR, but I can enthusiastically encourage you to stick to it!! 🙂
Colorimetry
Here’s my week: Colorimetry
I’m a total sucker as well!! I could probably go two years without buying another book. I have serious book buying addiction problems!
Good luck with the book buying ban! Facebook recently enforced the new timeline on my profile. One update popped up from 2008 where I stated I would not be buying anymore books. I think I lasted one week with that 😐
I’ve reserved The Marriage Plot from my local library. I’m fifth in the queue so hopefully it will get round to me soon.
Book buying bans are nearly impossible for those of us in the book community – we just love them so much!
I hope you enjoy The Marriage Plot and I hope I do as well once I can finally get into it.
Good for you and good luck!!! Not sure I could do it… library sale is in March!!! 🙂
Thanks! I’ve tried before and failed miserably, but feeling super positive about this latest ban! Of course, I get to cheat for my book club books. Doesn’t count, right?
I loved The Marriage Plot, but I read it when I was in the perfect mood for that sort of book, and I think that made a world of difference.
I don’t have a book acquisition ban, but I have been trying to read books from my own shelves from Jan-March. So far I’ve had minimal success.
See, I never have problems reading from my own shelves, but I just can’t stop adding to my shelves in the meanwhile.
