TSS: So Long, Cable!

Yep – I’m ditching cable television.  For good.  I’ve gone without cable many times over the years and never actually missed it.  I mean, the couple of shows I’m loyal to are available for free on their respective websites.  For other shows, such as Mad Men and True Blood, buying a season pass online is so much cheaper than the $100 cable bill every month.

I’ve just found myself very disheartened with the lack of substance in television these days.  I loathe and despise reality tv.  And I’ve even ditched half the shows I used to be loyal to because they’ve grown ridiculous and should have been cancelled YEARS ago.  I miss the days of Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars.

Nothing much else going on this fabulous Sunday morning.  The dogs wouldn’t let me sleep in which is nothing new.  The HUBS is still snoring away.  I bought my tickets to The Hunger Games – not the midnight showing, but rather a Saturday evening viewing that many fellow Litwits will be attending as well.

As for my reading, I’m definitely in a slump.  I don’t think I finished a single book last week.  I’m halfway through Beautiful Creatures and have started a couple of others, but nothing is compelling me to keep reading.  I don’t blame the books; I blame myself.  Just haven’t been in the mood to read lately.  Burned out.  This always happens to me when the weather starts to turn warm!

Anywhoosie – have a fabulous Sunday!

  1. Congratulations, my wife and I have been cable-free for almost five years and we’ve never looked back. We do subscribe to Netflix, but it’s so much cheaper than the $150-plus a month we were paying for digital cable that included a DVR so we could build up a catalog of shows we never got around to watching. Now we watch what we want when we want and we read when we want. We listen to music too. I have no doubt that you won’t regret the decision — at all.

    • I haven’t been watching tv at all and still haven’t had a good reading attention span. But I’m happy with no cable and more money in my pocket.

  2. Oh, my, that is courageous! But as I study my bill each month, and as I groan under the sheer weight of it, I also curse a lot at how many “repeats” are showing on the series of movie channels. Perhaps I’ll just dump the movies package.

My Internet, phones, and TV are all “bundled,” but it is possible to tweak things up a bit.

    Good luck!

    • My TV and internet are bundled as well – but they are about to be unbundled! We subscribe to both HBO and Showtime which has been severely disappointing as far as movie selection is concerned. We’ll keep our Netflix for movies or hit up a local Redbox!

    • I don’t watch more than 4 or 5 shows a week, but can easily watch them online for $30 a month instead of $120 a month. And yes, GG is filled with awesome!

    • My husband was only too glad to stop paying that bill. He did make sure he would still be able to watch certain shows.
