TSS: Libraries and Surprises

TSSbadge2So much to talk about! Such a busy week filled with the good and the bad. Most of the bad took place in the political and judicial realms. I won’t go into these things, but they made me very sad. Also, Cory Monteith’s death is tragic. I am so sorry for the pain his parents and loved ones are going through and the hole in their hearts that will never be full again.

Personally, my week was filled with the good. Work went smoothly, jury duty was over quickly, and much fun was had. Friday some friends and I went to dinner at The One Sushi + which is a great little Asian Fusion restaurant near our house. They serve Taiwanese fried rice like Jimmy makes with Taiwanese sausage that makes all the difference. Then we went to see Pacific Rim which was cheesy, geeky awesomesauce. Saturday was relaxed and filled with books. Because as the title suggests I finally got a library card!!! Just another way to feed my obsession. At least this one is easy on the wallet.

This week the booktube community is participating in a BookTube-A-Thon. See below my kickoff video and all the lovelies I plan to read this week. I’m sort of cheating since I’ve been reading Lolita and Casino Royale all weekend. I’ve also added T.C. Boyle’s Tooth & Claw short story collection to my reading list since I picked it up at the library. As for this week’s reviews, you can look forward to my thoughts on Where’d You Go Bernadette and American Born Chinese.

And one more thing:

I love that J.K. Rowling was able to publish something secretly. And yes, I ordered it immediately. Because I am a sucker for all the things Rowling. Except for A Casual Vacancy which I haven’t read, nor do I own.

How was your week? Are you excited for the new Rowling novel? Checked out anything amazing from your library recently?

  1. welcome to the world of library supporters! and to answer your question, my latest from the library is an authobiography by Edna O’Brien the author of The Country Girls. A book that was burned in her home country of Ireland. Superb woman.

  2. So much sad news in the world today. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I’m glad to hear things are going well for you personally though! ๐Ÿ˜€

I really want to get to Lolita sometime in the next decade, lol. I hope you enjoy The Secret Life of Bees, I did! The Panopticon sounds really good.

Good luck with the challenge, loved the video!

  3. I didn’t know there was a right way to pronounce Dekalb. ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyway, like Jennifer said, I’m glad to hear things are going well for you personally, especially in getting a library card as I work at a library. Whenever I hear people are using libraries, it’s good news to me. Personally, and I’m not just saying this because I work at one, although that’s part of it, I couldn’t survive without libraries. That’s where I get most of my reading material, especially e-books, even though this weekend I’m reading print editions from our library. I also love the videos you post and am impressed by how composed you are throughout and no “ums” or not many from what I heard. I don’t think I could do that.

    • Haha – if you pronounce Dekalb without the ‘l’ being silent you will get death stares here. I do love libraries – grew up in them – but I own so many books that throwing more onto my TBR felt like overkill – plus the deadlines. But I’ve always supported my locals with book donations and fundraising. As for the videos, thanks! I’ve never been an ‘um-er’ so I can’t really brag about it, and the comfort comes from talking to myself more than a normal amount – haha.

  4. I really need to start getting into this booktubing thing! Even though I’m kind of terrible at it… lots of “umms” and “awesomes”. I need to learn how to edit videos.

I am SO excited to check out Rowling’s secret book. I hope it’s good… because I couldn’t even finish The Casual Vacancy.

    Have a great week! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Booktubing is awesome, but you will spend money on books – it’s a problem. As for the editing – I’m just now trying to learn. Not very good so haven’t actually edited anything yet.

  5. Hmm library card and Pacific Rim – awesomeness! ๐Ÿ™‚ Just heard about ‘Roberts’ novel this morning and the reviews on goodreads look good so I might have to try it! My week was fairly standard but so HOT! There’s a wretched heat wave here atm that’s stolen my sleep and forced me to buy one of those 78 hour scientifically imbued with weird magic hocus pocus deodorants. But I shouldn’t complain, sunshine’s good for the soul, right? ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Definitely awesome! I’ve been hearing good things about The Cuckoo’s Calling. Heatwaves can suck – we’re currently experiencing tons of rain and lack of heat which is just plain weird for Georgia!

    • I know – I took the plunge and already borrowed three books. You should give booktube a chance. I’m super shy and introverted, but enjoy the community and making videos so much.

  6. Ok, I’m so curious what made you order Cuckoo’s Calling immediately but not Casual Vacancy! I haven’t read CV but haven’t heard stellar things.

Enjoy the library card! I like the library in theory but I don’t like having to read the books on a schedule. I have one out right now that keeps haunting me but I’m not sure I’ll be able to finish it before it’s due (for the third time). I DO love my library for audio, though!

    • I definitely think CV just sounded sort of dull whereas Cuckoo’s Calling sounds a bit more exciting. Plus, I was terrified for her first post-HP novel to suck so I just avoided.

I’m loving the card so far. I don’t like having deadlines, but figure three weeks is doable if I check out books I immediately want to read. We’ll see. It could be a good thing or a bad thing, but having a card is free so no excuse not to.

  7. I love my library! Yes, I sometimes don’t get to everything I check out, but I can always try again at a later time.

And you’ve reminded me that I still haven’t write my “Bernadette” review :/
